A New Opportunity
By Mary Jo Joyce

The immediate objective of Cedar Lake Conservation Foundation is to acquire key parcels of land to create the Kettle Hills Nature Preserve. This is a continuation of the Foundation's model for the preservation of natural areas, which is to unite private and public lands, promote conservation and utilize development agreements and deed restrictions to ensure public use. Through donations of land and financial contributions, the Foundation has protected more than 2,000 acres of environmentally sensitive property. The Kettle Hills Nature Preserve will benefit the public by providing:

The creation  of the 645-acre Kettle Hills Nature Preserve will be a unique cooperative effort between private individuals, the Cedar Lake Conservation Fund, the state of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and property owners. Bounded by U.S. Highway 41, State Highway 144, County Highway NN and private land, this nature preserve is a distinctive natural area, unsurpassed in importance to the people of rapidly growing Washington County. Its size, topography and configuration make it an important conservation site encompassing significant ecological diversity while providing habitats for species that require large, diverse areas. The heart of this natural preserve will provide natural evidence of our geological and environmental heritage.

This area is in the cross hairs of imminent development. If we do not act, our watershed will resemble suburban areas such as Bluemound Road  rather than remain tranquil retreats to nature. Future generations deserve an area of peace and tranquility while protecting and sharing the character of the Kettle Moraine. Contributions to the Kettle Hills Nature Preserve Fund and the Cedar Lakes Conservation Foundation will protect, restore and preserve the glacial topography, watershed, savannas, farmland, forest land, wetlands and scenic properties within their portion of Washington County.

Help us by  sending a contribution today.
